Disease and Disorders of Freshwater Unionid Mussels: A Brief Overview of Recent Studies

چکیده
The use of aquatic invertebrates in biomedical research and as environmental sentinels has dramatically grown in recent decades, with an increased need in understanding of comparative pathology. The Unionids freshwater mussels are a group of worldwide distributed bivalves residing small ditches and ponds, lakes, canals and rivers, often used as animal test in eco-toxicological studies. Once one of the most abundant bivalve molluscs in ancient rivers around the world, now many of them are declining in many countries and consequently are nearly extinct in many areas. The causes of this decline are not fully understood but alteration and degradation of the freshwater habitat seemed to play a central role. To date, link causality to the observed losses during episode of mussel die-offs has been more difficult to establish, and disease and pathogen presence have been scarcely considered. In this article we provide a brief overview of unionids freshwater mussel conservation status, also describing reported diseases and pathogens and illustrating a few relatively well-documented studies.

Pathogens And Diseases Of Freshwater Mussels In The United States: Studies On Bacterial Transmission And Depuration
Unionid mussels are recognized as important contributors to healthy aquatic ecosystems, as well as bioindicators of environmental perturbations. Because they are sedentary, filter feeding animals and require hosts (i.e., fishes) to transform embryonic glochidia, mussels are susceptible to direct adverse environmental parameters, and indirect parameters that restrict the timely presence of the h...
متن کاملHorizontal and vertical movements of unionid mussels in a lowland river
Freshwater mussels are important constituents of freshwater ecosystems, yet much of their basic biology remains to be examined. The behavior of 3 species of unionid mussels (Unio tumidus, Unio pictorum, and Anodonta anatina) was examined in the lowland River Spree (Germany). Mussels were marked individually, and their positions on the sediment surface and depth below the sediment surface were r...

Morphological and chromosomal characteristics of a number of unionid freshwater mussels were studied from northeastern Thailand. Karyotypes of eight species from seven genera (Chamberlainia, Ensidens, Hyriopsis, Physunio, Pseudodon, Scabies and Trapezoideus) were examined. Six species possess 2n = 38 karyotypes, whereas Scabiescrispata and an unidentified Scabies sp. lack three small chromosome...
متن کاملDevelopment of species-specific primers with potential for amplifying eDNA from imperilled freshwater unionid mussels.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is emerging as a potentially powerful tool for inferring species' presence, and hence occupancy, from DNA that is shed into environmental samples such as water. Although eDNA screening has been used to detect DNA from a variety of taxonomic groups, it has not yet been used to identify DNA from species with numerous potentially sympatric confamilial species, a situation ...
متن کاملAssessing species invasions as a cause of extinction
In a recent Opinion in TREE [1], Gurevitch and Padilla question the generalization that biological invasions are a leading cause of species extinctions. The authors note that declines of native species frequently overlap in space and time with invasions by alien species, and these co-occurrences are sometimes used to infer a causal relationship – a potentially erroneous conclusion given that a ...
